LONGVIEW, TX – Is your home qualified for an exemption from property taxes? The Gregg Appraisal District wants to remind owners that many types of exemptions are available to help reduce property taxes.
In May, voters will have the opportunity to approve an increase from $25,000 to $40,000 for the state homestead exemption. If approved by voters, this increase will positively affect new and existing homestead exemption amounts and will adjust existing tax ceilings for property owners already qualified for over 65, disabled person or disabled veteran homestead exemptions. Also, if approved, the change of exemption amount will be retroactive to 1/1/22.
New laws from the 87th Legislative session have made other beneficial changes to exemptions. The qualification date for the homestead exemption has been changed from January 1 of the year following purchase of the property to the date the property is acquired and occupied. This gives the home owner tax savings starting in the first year of ownership. The exemption amount will be prorated for the first year based on the owner’s qualification date. The qualification date requirements include all three of the following:
- Filing of deed with the County Clerk’s office,
- Updated driver’s license with new address, and
- Physically occupying the property.
Another legislative change resulting in tax savings for Texas property owners is a change to the minimal taxable value for Business Personal Property accounts.
There also has been further easing of the monetary penalty associated with a change in use for qualified agricultural or timber land. The “roll back” rate calculation now covers a three-year value period rather than a five-year period and will have no interest charges added.
